In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant explosions shaking Tehran, following statements from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet stated, without initially offer further details.
Background: Rising Strains and Prior Events
The incident occurs against a background of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major events leading up to this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of more discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
