Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever any cohesion maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that he might quit were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.

The Youngster's Surprising Presence

One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were advocating for him to extend his stay for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team without replacements.

He signed initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, almost all of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to identify the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Billed as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
