Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
