Individuals who experienced abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism after their first encounter with the new Pope at the Vatican.

The board president, who leads the anti-abuse organization, commented that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the issue.

Global Zero-Tolerance Policy Pushed

The organization is advocating for a global zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any priest who confesses to or is found guilty of abusing a child. This policy has been implemented in the United States.

The Pope recognized that there is "opposition in certain regions of the world" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is resistance," Hickey remarked.

Inherited Challenge

The current pontiff, who assumed the role in spring, has taken on this persistent issue that has plagued the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the situation included an historic summit on child abuse within the institution and changes to canon law to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For the representative, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the measure is personal. The Canadian activist revealed they were abused by a priest who was later moved between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we aim to collaborate with him," they stated. "Both sides share the common objective, we seek to eliminate clergy abuse."

Significant Meeting

Multiple members of the coalition, which includes victims and advocates from over thirty nations, engaged with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The discussion, originally scheduled for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was described as "very understanding" when hearing the story of a woman victimized at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in Canada.

Hickey noted the Pope was "compassionate" about their personal story and appeared "very humble, humorous, and approachable."

"Victims have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," they commented. "I believed like he was genuine, practical, and very open and eager to work with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The organization is advocating that revisions to church regulations will facilitate the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy globally.

They have spoken with specialists and compiled materials that they plan to present to Pope Leo.

"He appeared interested in reviewing it," they remarked.

Accountability Emphasized

A recent church-ordered document emphasized the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or removal of religious officials or personnel in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The report also pointed out that survivors consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for bishops and senior officials to be held accountable for inaction and concealment."

Moving Forward

Hickey shared they informed the Pope at the beginning of their meeting: "This is as much a risk for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the meeting, Hickey expressed hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, uniting and building a connection and persisting to strengthen that bond is a move in the right direction," they stated.

They concluded that they shared with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can alter how the story ends - he valued that."
